Interfaces Crystallization Viscoelasticity

Description

Epoxy resins are regarded as thermosetting resins and have found various c- mercial applications after crosslinking with adequate curing agents [1-3]. H- ever, some epoxy resins have been used as thermoplastic resins without curing agents. Figure 1 shows the applications of epoxy resins that are classi?ed to three categories: thermosets in combination with curing agents, thermoplastics wi- out curing agents, and raw materials for modi?cation. The use in thermoplastics is not popular compared with the two other applications. Typical thermoplastic applications are found in stabilizers for vinyl resins, toners for copying - chines, ?re retardants for engineering plastics, and sizing material for glass or carbon ?bers. The epoxy resin most frequently used is the oligomer of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) whose chemical structure is shown below [1-3]. The DGEBA is composed of linear molecules with different molecular weights according to the variation of the repeated number (n) in the structural formula.

Dusa McDuff,Dietmar Salamon: Introduction to Symplectic Topology

Introduction to Symplectic Topology

Description

Symplectic structures underlie the equations of classical mechanics and their properties are reflected in the behaviour of a wide range of physical systems. Over the last few years powerful new methods in analysis and topology have led to the development of the modern global theory of symplectic topology, including several striking and important results. At its publication in 1995, Introduction to Symplectic Topology was the first comprehensive introduction to the subject, and has since become an established text in this fast-developing area of mathematics. This second edition has been significantly revised and expanded, with new references and examples added and theorems included or revised. A section has been included on new developments in the subject, and there is a more extensive discussion of Taubes and Donaldson's recent contributions to the subject. From reviews of the first edition: '...an authoritative and comprehensive reference...McDuff and Salamon have done an enormous service to the symplectic community: their book greatly enhances the accessibility of the subject to students and researchers alike.' Book Reviews, AMS

Information and Communication Technologies in Everyday Life : A Concise Introduction and Research Guide

Description

The internet, television, mobile phones, computer-based devices and other new forms of information technology are changing at a rapid pace with potentially profound but also subtle influences on social life. Yet, they also pose challenges and have to be managed. This book offers a succinct introduction to both the experience and implications of these information and communication technologies (ICTs) in everyday life. Bringing together empirical and theoretical research in a coherent way, the author offers a fresh approach to understanding ICTs and everyday life. He covers topics in key areas, such as the digital divide; children, youth and ICTs; the dynamics of ICTs within households; social networks and ICTs; and time, movement and public space in relationship to ICTs. Drawing on a broad variety of studies from different countries, the author considers the potential, or feared, social consequences of ICTs. Throughout, he analyzes what factors are shaping the debates surrounding information and communication technologies in daily life. With its concise, international approach, this book will be invaluable to professionals, policymakers and students who work in the field of ICTs.

Is marriage the foundation of family life? Many people today would say, No! Others would say, Yes!, but they would define family and marriage in ways at odds with how the words have been used almost throughout human history. In this revised and expanded edition of Marriage: The Rock on Which the Family is Built, internationally-renowned theologian William E. May makes the case for marriage's foundational role for family, with Information and Communication Technologies in Everyday Life : A Concise Introduction and Research Guide free pdf marriage defined as the union of one man and one woman. Drawing on Pope John Paul II's theology of the body, he explains the person-affirming, love-enabling, life-giving, and sanctifying nature of marriage. He shows how marriage is necessarily a complementary union of man and woman and how this rules out the idea of same-sex marriage. May argues, drawing on Popes Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, that marriage fully respects the equal dignity of husband and wife as persons, while recognizing their unique, exclusive, enduring, unique, complementary contributions to their union. Likewise, he shows how marriage honors the truth that each new human life brought about by sexual union is a person equal in dignity to his mother and father. What's more, both reason and revelation are used to show that only the family, founded on marriage as an enduring, mutually exclusive union of one man and one woman, provides the proper context for begetting and raising children. Reproductive technologies are also critically examined and the author argues that human beings ought to be begotten in an act of spousal love, not made through in vitro fertilization. Furthermore, the role of the family as the domestic church, a community of holiness, is explored. This expanded edition includes new chapters: 'Man and Woman He Created Them': Pope John Paul II's Catechesis on Human Sexuality and Pope Benedict XVI and Marriage, the latter summarizing Benedict's thought on marriage, particularly as found in his first encyclical Deus Caritas Est. Also included is Pope John Paul II's Letter to Families.

Stephen King: Revival

Revival

Description

A spectacularly dark and electrifying novel about addiction, religion, music and what might exist on the other side of life. In a small New England town, in the early 60s, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister, Charles Jacobs. Soon they forge a deep bond, based on their fascination with simple experiments in electricity. Decades later, Jamie is living a nomadic lifestyle of bar-band rock and roll. Now an addict, he sees Jacobs again - a showman on stage, creating dazzling 'portraits in lightning' - and their meeting has profound consequences for both men. Their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil's devising, and Jamie discovers that revival has many meanings. This rich and disturbing novel spans five decades on its way to the most terrifying conclusion Stephen King has ever written. It's a masterpiece from King, in the great American tradition of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe.

Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet Francois Rabelais called the Great Perhaps. Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young. Clever, funny, screwed-up, and dead sexy, Alaska will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps. Looking for Alaska brilliantly chronicles the indelible impact one life can have on another. A stunning debut, it marks John Green s arrival as an important new voice in contemporary fiction." Though it deals with devastating loss, About Alice is also a love story, chronicling a romance that began at a Manhattan party when Calvin Trillin desperately tried to impress a young woman who "seemed to glow." It s mid-May and murder is once again in full bloom in Crozet, Virginia or so it seems to Mary Minor Harry Haristeen. The trouble begins when Harry s dear friend Miranda Hogendobber takes her on a leisurely drive that ends in a narrow drainage ditch. The chaos continues when the Very Reverend Herbert Jones s Chevy pickup also abruptly goes kaput. But these vehicular mishaps are nothing compared to the much more distressing state of a mechanic discovered by Harry in a local repair shop: His head s been bashed in. Despite numerous warnings from her much-loved coterie of friends, human and otherwise, Harry quickly surmises that the time has come to pop the hood and conduct her own investigation. Her animal companions see disaster fast approaching but can do little except try their best to protect their foolishly intrepid human. Harry s race to the truth leads straight to David Busch's Compact Field Guide for the Nikon D800/D800E free download pdf powerful forces determined to avoid scrutiny at any cost even if it means running Harry Haristeen off the road for good.

George P Pelecanos: Shame the Devil

Shame the Devil

Description

The boys are back in town Frank Farrow is a natural-born killer. Roman Otis is a fine-looking crooner who does his killing on the side. On a hot D.C. afternoon Frank and Roman hit a pizza shop called May's. When the hit was over, four people were executed. A cop was shot. A boy was dead. And when the sirens stopped wailing and the killers vanished into the heat, dozens of lives were shattered forever. Now it's three years later, and Dimitri Karras, who lost a son, is starting to live again. But Dimitri's old acquaintance, a P.I. named Nick Stefanos, has just unburied the past--by discovering the killers' identity. Suddenly the second act of a crime story is about to be told. Because the May's pizza parlor killers are coming back into town: where they'll be greeted with open arms, broken hearts, and at least one loaded gun.

By Robert Jordan, Harriet McDougal, Alan Romanczuk, and Maria SimonsThe Wheel of Time Companion Dracula, that compelling creature of the night, continues his neck-biting ways in a version of the novel that children will devour. Moving from Transylvania to London, the timeless vampire serves up thrills and chills as he imprisons and terrorizes the innocent Jonathan Harker and then goes after his fiancee, Mina and her friend Lucy. From creepy, insect-eating Renfield to Dr. Van Helsing - who valiantly fights Dracula's evil - the characters and drama are spellbinding. - Witches' Hollow A new schoolteacher puts his soul in peril while trying to save one of his students from a ravenous creature. Caillou And Gilbert A single fundamental trick (the trick of trying to predict your own sensory inputs) thus enables learning, empowers moment-by-moment perception, Shame the Devil pdf and installs a rich understanding of the surrounding world. Action itself now appears in a new and revealing light. For action is not so much a 'response to an input' as a neat and efficient way of selecting the next 'input'. As mobile embodied agents we are forever intervening, actively bringing about the very streams of sensory information that our brains are simultaneously trying to predict. This binds perception and action in a delicate dance, a virtuous circle in which neural circuits animate, and are animated by, the movements of our own bodies. Some of our actions, in turn, structure the physical, social, and technological worlds around us. This moves the goalposts by altering the very things we need to engage and predict. Surfing Uncertainty brings work on the predictive brain into full and satisfying contact with work on the embodied and culturally situated mind. What emerges is a bold new vision of what brains do that places circular causal flows and the active structuring of the environment, center-stage.

Michael Pearce: The Mark of the Pasha

The Mark of the Pasha

Description

The Great War has ended, and the army is keen to be demobbed. But Willoughby, the new British High Commissioner in Egypt, has managed to affront the Khedive by refusing to receive rival delegations fueled by rising nationalism. Then, when some Armenians, Copts, and English civil servants are attacked, a state of emergency is declared. Gareth Cadwallader Owen is the Mamur Zapt, the Head of the Khedive's Secret Police. Unlike his British colleagues, Owen works for the Khedive. His is an uncomfortable perch as agitation for political and social restructuring grows. Furthermore, Owen is married to a pasha's daughter, Zeinab, herself straddling a cultural divide. The Khedive has declared a procession: he'll drive around Cairo with his Ministers. Owen, who has spent his career defusing political time bombs, learns the streets have been made dangerous by threats of real bombs. The first order of business is to ward them off. The second is to insure the safety of an impending major European delegation to the capital. But what does it all have to do with Owen's shiny new motor car? Praise for The Mark of the Pasha..."So witty and plausible that you'll regret missing Cairo's heyday." -Kirkus Reviews Michael Pearce grew up in the (then) Anglo-Egyptian Sudan among the political and other tensions he draws on for his books. Although Egypt has evolved dramatically since Owen's career began in 1908, the charm of this 16th Mamur Zapt novel is unabated.

Description

It's a land of riddles, where a winter night can last for weeks and where the ground is full of water though it rarely rains or snows. Bears, hares, wolves, and foxes roam the ice-crusted earth, as flowers follow the sun as it moves across the sky. Young readers may never come to the Arctic tundra, but now it can come to them - in a book chock full of fun-to-do experiments and activities for children ages 6 and up that help them to solve some of the mysteries of this strange and forbidding world. "Arctic Tundra" includes a picture field guide, a glossary-index, and a resource list.

Vivian Maier: Street Photographer

Description

Please note that all blank pages in the book were chosen as part of the design by the publisher. A good street photographer must be possessed of many talents: an eye for detail, light, and composition; impeccable timing; a populist or humanitarian outlook; and a tireless ability to constantly shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot and never miss a moment. It is hard enough to find these qualities in trained photographers with the benefit of schooling and mentors and a community of fellow artists and aficionados supporting and rewarding their efforts. It is incredibly rare to find it in someone with no formal training and no network of peers. Yet Vivian Maier is all of these things, a professional nanny, who from the 1950s until the 1990s took over 100,000 photographs worldwide from France to New York City to Chicago and dozens of other countries and yet showed the results to no one. The photos are amazing both for the breadth of the work and for the high quality of the humorous, moving, beautiful, and raw images of all facets of city life in America s post-war golden age. It wasn t until local historian John Maloof purchased a box of Maier s negatives from a Chicago auction house and began collecting and championing her marvelous work just a few years ago that any of it saw the light of day. Presented here for the first time in print, "Vivian Maier: Street Photographer" collects the best of her incredible, unseen body of work."

Michael Ondaatje: In the Skin of a Lion

In the Skin of a Lion

Description

'A magical book. Michael Ondaatje defies the normal distinction between poet and novelist. His writing is consistently tuned to a visionary pitch' Graham Swift It is the 1920s, and Patrick Lewis has arrived in the bustling city of Toronto, leaving behind his Canadian wilderness home. He immerses himself in the lives of the people who surround him, learning, from their stories, the history of the city itself. And he has his own adventures: searching for a missing millionaire, tunnelling beneath Lake Ontario, falling in love. In the Skin of a Lion is Michael Ondaatje's sparkling predecessor to his Booker Prize-winning The English Patient. It is here that we encounter, for the first time, Hana the orphaned girl and Caravaggio the thief, among a large cast of characters who are all lovingly and intimately portrayed. It is an exquiste and musical novel, a romance that challenges the boundary between history and myth. 'Ondaatje writes in curves, in time-lapses, a sort of verbal cinema whose narrative is unfaltering' The Times 'A triumph ...a powerful and revelatory accomplishment' Times Literary Supplement

Bryan Stevenson: Just Mercy

Just Mercy

Description

"New York Times "Bestseller - Named one of the Best Books of the Year by "The New York Times The Washington Post The Boston Globe The Seattle Times Esquire Time" Winner of the Carnegie Medal for Nonfiction -Winner of the NAACP Image Award for Nonfiction - Winner of a Books for a Better Life Award - Finalist for the Los Angeles Book Prize - Finalist for the "Kirkus Reviews "Prize - An American Library Association Notable Book A powerful true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to fix our broken system of justice from one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever. "Just Mercy "is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice. Praise for "Just Mercy" Every bit as moving as "To Kill a Mockingbird, "and in some ways more so . . . a searing indictment of American criminal justice and a stirring testament to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields. David Cole, "The New York Review of Books" "" Searing, moving . . . Bryan Stevenson may, indeed, be America s Mandela. Nicholas Kristof, "The New York Times" "" You don t have to read too long to start cheering for this man. . . . The message of this book . . . is that evil can be overcome, a difference can be made. "Just Mercy" will make you upset and it will make you hopeful. Ted Conover, "The New York Times Book Review " "" Inspiring . . . a work of style, substance and clarity . . . Stevenson is not only a great lawyer, he s also a gifted writer and storyteller. "The Washington Post" As deeply moving, poignant and powerful a book as has been, and maybe ever can be, written about the death penalty. " The Financial Times" Brilliant. " The Philadelphia Inquirer" "" Not since Atticus Finch has a fearless and committed lawyer made such a difference in the American South. Though larger than life, Atticus exists only in fiction. Bryan Stevenson, however, is very much alive and doing God s work fighting for the poor, the oppressed, the voiceless, the vulnerable, the outcast, and those with no hope. "Just Mercy" is his inspiring and powerful story. John Grisham Bryan Stevenson is one of my personal heroes, perhaps the most inspiring and influential crusader for justice alive today, and "Just Mercy" is extraordinary. The stories told within these pages hold the potential to transform what we think we mean when we talk about justice. Michelle Alexander, author of "The New Jim Crow""

Biblical Theology in the Life of the Church: A Guide for Ministry

Description

Capitol Hill Baptist Church associate pastor Michael Lawrence contributes to the IXMarks series as he centers on the practical importance of biblical theology to ministry. He begins with an examination of a pastor's tools of the trade: exegesis and biblical and systematic theology. The book distinguishes between the power of narrative in biblical theology and the power of application in systematic theology, but also emphasizes the importance of their collaboration in ministry. Having laid the foundation for pastoral ministry, Lawrence uses the three tools to build a biblical theology, telling the entire story of the Bible from five different angles. He puts biblical theology to work in four areas: counseling, missions, caring for the poor, and church/state relations. Rich in application and practical insight, this book will equip pastors and church leaders to think, preach, and do ministry through the framework of biblical theology.

In OSCAR WILDE AND THE RING OF DEATH, the second in Gyles Brandreth's acclaimed Oscar Wilde Murder Mysteries series featuring Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle, a parlour game of 'Murder' has lethal consequences...'Intelligent, amusing and entertaining' Alexander McCall Smith 'I see murder in this unhappy hand...' For the fourteen 'victims' begin to die mysteriously, one by one, and in the order in which their names were drawn from the bag...With growing horror, Wilde and his confidantes Robert Sherard and Arthur Conan Doyle, realise that one of their guests that evening must be the murderer. In a race against time, Wilde will need Biblical Theology in the Life of the Church: A Guide for Ministry download PDF all his powers of deduction and knowledge of human behaviour before he himself - the thirteenth name on the list - becomes the killer's next victim.

Hard-Boiled Wonderland / the End of the World

Description

In this hyperkinetic and relentlessly inventive novel, Japan s most popular (and controversial) fiction writer hurtles into the consciousness of the West. "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World "draws readers into a narrative particle accelerator in which a split-brained data processor, a deranged scientist, his shockingly undemure granddaughter, Lauren Bacall, Bob Dylan, and various thugs, librarians, and subterranean monsters collide to dazzling effect. What emerges is simultaneously cooler than zero and unaffectedly affecting, a hilariously funny and deeply serious meditation on the nature and uses of the mind."

The NEW YORK TIMES bestselling series returns with an even deadlier challenge, as a new enemy is revealed to be searching for The 39 Clues too...New cards unlock tightly guarded secrets and Clues. More titles available: CAHILLS VS VESPERS: CARD PACK 1 (9780545316408). Next, you'll learn to work with operators, objects and data-sources in increasingly realistic situations. Finally, you'll start putting the pieces Hard-Boiled Wonderland / the End of the World free pdf together to create sophisticated programs of your own design confident that you've built a firm base of experience from which to grow. Whatever society we live in, and however open-minded we like to think we are, when it comes to our sex lives we all like to keep a few secrets. But this makes the jobs of sexologists -- professionals who study sexual behaviour -- pretty difficult. Luckily, David Spiegelhalter, Professor of Risk at Cambridge University, is here to unravel the web of exaggerations, misdirections and downright lies that surround sex in modern society. Drawing on the Natsal survey, the widest survey of sexual behaviour since the Kinsey Report, he answers crucial questions such as what are we all doing? How often? And how has it changed? Accompanying a major Wellcome exhibition on the same subject, Sex by Numbers is an informed and entertaining look at the most enduring of human obsessions, from one-night stands to the seven-year itch.

The Sleeping Voice pdf

Dulce Chacon,Nick Caistor: The Sleeping Voice

The Sleeping Voice

Description

"Dulce Chacon's book has had an immense success in Spain, no doubt because the novelist speaks with a just and powerful voice, and because she has allowed women - the most anonymous, the most suppressed, the most silenced - to speak out" - Le Monde It is 1939. In the Ventas prison in Madrid, a group of women have been incarcerated. Their crime is to have supported or fought on the Republican side in Spain's cruel and devastating Civil War. Chief among them are Hortensia, who fought with the militia and is pregnant by her husband Felipe - a man still at large and fighting against Franco's dictatorship - and who lives with the knowledge that she will be shot after she gives birth; sixteen-year-old Elvira, who tried to leave Spain with her mother, but was arrested by the Falangists while she was boarding their ship; Tomasa, whose husband, four sons and daughter-in-law were thrown off a bridge; and Pepita, Hortensia's sister, who from outside the prison acts as messenger between her and her husband. Dulce Chacon's deeply moving novel is based on the actual testimonies of a number of women who survived the Spanish Civil War, and suffered imprisonment under the France regime, as well as on accounts of others who died fighting for freedom. A bestseller in Spain, where it was voted 'Book of the year', "The Sleeping Voice" is remarkable for its combination of dramatic intensity and historical authenticity.
